Oh my!

[Ming is down by the water in Violet City, looking very cheerful and flushed. Her Lapras is visible in the water behind her.]

I feel particularly wonderful this afternoon! Violet City's just lovely, really, we've been having a delightful time! Except for my Hoothoot, but I don't think he's ever happy. I acquired him accidentally - I tried to set him free, but he wouldn't go! He didn't even like the aerial show. One would imagine he'd enjoy that.

But I'm feeling terribly social. I haven't the faintest idea what's come over me!

[Violet City's locally made 'grape juice' is what's come over her.]

Oh! Tell me about your adventures in this world? I'd love to hear them. I adore a good adventure!

[Ming laughs. While the bottle beside her is a glass one, there's nothing to immediately indicate it's alcoholic. Which is how she's gotten into this situation in the first place.]

There are no Lapras here. In fact, there hardly seem to be any anywhere! I don't know how I'm going to find a partner for Kotone.

No, I think that would be a bit of a stretch.

[Those orange fish pokemon seem harmless enough. Why couldn't he have caught one of those when he went fishing?]

You can make 'go on an expedition to find another Lapras' one of your goals in this place.

[Roy doesn't see why you would want more sea monsters, but Kotone is much nicer than his Tentacool.]

Someone told me they turn into dragons. Can you believe it?

[Ming pats the blanket she's sitting on, inviting Roy to join her.]

Yes, I surely must, if I'm expected to breed my Pokemon! She can't do that all by herself. Not to any success, at any rate!

[She giggles, eyes a bit impish.]

I have a fire breathing dog, so why not? You could catch one and find out.

[ Nothing about this world makes any sense. He sits down on the blanket and sets his backpack down.]

No, that's definitely an activity for two.

[ He appreciates Ming's sense of humor. ]

Maybe I will... if nothing else, they are amusing little fellows!

[And laughably easy to catch as far as she can tell. She sighs softly and shifts on the blanket, settling more comfortably.]

It's such a pity the season's set to turn soon. Do you think it gets very cold? I don't like the cold. I've had frightfully bad experiences with the snow.

And then breed them and have a whole pond full of strange little orange fish.

[Roy almost feels bad for the poor little creatures.]

I hope not. I'm not much of a cold weather person. I've seen snow, but we don't get many hard freezes in Eastern and Central Amestris.

We don't have snow at all in Numara. It's a tropical paradise. Even in months when the northern continent is swaddled in storms, Numarans bathe naked in the sea.

[Oh, she does have a pining for the shores and shoals of her beloved islands.]

I think I'd go mad, without the sea around us everywhere here. I do love it so.

Numara's much warmer than Amestris, then, but I have to say, a country where people bathe naked in the sea all year long does sound nice.

[Roy doesn't understand what the big deal about the sea is. A body of water is a body of water, right? Some are nicer than others, true, but there can't be that much difference.]

We're deep in the Southern Sea. It's as close to utopia as can exist, really. And it was nothing but barren lumps of rock and clay, a thousand years ago. Nothing would grow at all, the poor people were desperate and dying. But look at it now. A beacon of art and science and learning in a broken world.

[She's quite proud of her little island nation. It's come so far. She reaches over and squeezes Roy's arm.]

I wish you could see it.

[He looks down when Ming squeezes his arm, then smiles and puts his hand on top of hers.]

It doesn't sound like we get a chance to stop by other people's homes on our way out of here, but if we could I would like to see it.

[Roy has his own little broken world to fix.]

It really is a pity, isn't it? All of this it's...well, it's out of time, it's out of reality. Why, that's both frightening and freeing, don't you think?

[It's been impressed on her that she won't remember any of this when she returns to her world, where time hasn't moved at all.]

It's more of a relief than anything. I have important work to do in Amestris, and vanishing for an indefinite period of time would completely ruin my plans.

[He really wants to hold onto the idea that he will go right back to the moment he was taken from. Even if he doesn't remember all of this, he'll enjoy it while he can.

Roy leans back to stare up at the sky. He hasn't been able to relax like this in years.]

But when you return to that work, you won't remember any of this. It is freeing, in a way, but also that's frightening to think. All of this - this lovely afternoon, say - will all be gone as though it never happened.

[That's a sad thought. She won't even be able to tell anyone back home of her adventures here.]

If there has to be a price for this... then that seems equivalent. I can't think of anything else I'd give up in exchange.

[Everything has a price after all.]

Balance, I suppose. And maybe a natural effect of traveling between certain worlds. I lost my memories of my first world, when I came to the world I call my home now.

[But could a price really be asked, for something they'd never wanted to purchase in the first place? Ming isn't certain it's fair, in the universal sense.]

[That gets Roy's curiosity.]

Really? That's something to consider.

But if losing your memories is the price of travel between worlds, why do we remember our homes when we come here? Unless whatever's bringing us here is paying the toll for us, but we have to pay it when we return.

[He's thinking out loud now. Maybe some things in this world can make sense.]
